- CDS has identified that active region loops co-exist at wildly differing temperatures, with loops containing any
- temperature plasma from 20,000 to 2 million K extending 100,000 km into the corona. This highlights the fact that the
- magnetic field insulates the plasma from adjacent loops, and tells us something about the heating processes in the
- loops. In short, the active region loop is not what we thought it was.
-
- CDS has discovered a range of new phenomena such as jets of high temperature plasma in active regions, rotating
- columns of plasma in the polar regions (solar tornadoes) and a disease of small scale extreme UV flashes, known as
- blinkers, in the quiet Sun network which may relate to the basic heating and acceleration processes of the quiet corona.
